Jose “Joe” Prata, 70, passed away surrounded by the love of his amazing family. A devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Joe lived each day with a warm smile and a spirit that filled every room.
Without question, his greatest joy was his family. Joe was the proud father of three loving daughters. Sasha, Samie-Jo and Joelle-Sara, who were the center of his world. Becoming a grandfather brought him even more happiness, and he cherished every laugh, hug, and memory he shared with his grandchildren, Mia-Rae and Luis. Joe also survived by his sister Luisa Gonsalves as well as his nieces and nephews.
Joe took great pride in his Portuguese roots and the city of New Bedford. He found joy in the traditions of his community, in sharing food and wine and in celebrating the culture that shaped him. You could always find him at his favorite spot, Aliança, playing pool or simply sitting by the beach. His passion for soccer ran deep and his loyalty to his favorite team, Benfica, was matched only by his devotion to his church and faith, which guided him throughout his life to the very end.
Those who knew Joe will remember his love for life, his love of gathering with others and the way he made people feel at ease with nothing more than his smile and a hug. He lived fully, celebrated often and left behind countless stories that his loved ones will hold dear.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joe’s life at Waring Sullivan Home at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., in Fairhaven on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 from 4-7pm. Flowers are welcome, and may be sent to the funeral home.
