Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, a daughter of the late George M. and Julia M. (Plummer) Elliot, she grew up there before coming to America in 1956 with her sister Joyce. She also had two brothers, Robert & George.
Sheila worked in a ‘high-rise’ as an administrative secretary before eventually meeting her husband, the late Alfred L. Laferriere, at Mary’s Pond in Rochester. A true love-match, she settled in as a homemaker and stepmother to previously-widowed Fred’s five children before giving birth to four of their own. Fred was the love of her life and together, they set a wonderful example of what a healthy marriage looks like. They loved to spend time with family and often were found at the dances at St. Anthony’s Parish in New Bedford. Many memories were made on vacations in New Hampshire and with Cub Scouts when her children were young. While money may have been tight, love overflowed. A woman of either very little OR very many words, those around her knew exactly where they stood. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time and playing games or cards with her grandchildren and family. She loved the color purple, anything lemon, sweets of many kinds, and hot black tea, hold the sugar, “I’m sweet enough!’ she would exclaim. Grandma Sheila especially loved clamboils and ‘pit fires’ at her granddaughter’s yard. She was extremely happy to recently meet her newest great-grandson, Vincent at her 92nd birthday party. Though her stature may have been small, she was of strong will, moral character and family values and lived a full and happy life.
She is survived by her children, Lisa Pimental and her husband Arthur of Fall River, Mark Laferriere and his wife Brenda of Plymouth, Wayne Laferriere and his wife Christine of FL, and Robert Laferriere and his wife Patty of Acushnet; step children, Louis Laferriere of Key West, FL, Lorraine Soares of Dartmouth, Rosemary Herman of FL, Susan Bewsher of Fairhaven, and Irene of PA; eight grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 12, 2025 from 2-5 p.m. Her funeral will be Monday, January 13, 2025 at 10am, both in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven, MA 02719.
