Larissa and Aliza, I just saw Steve’s obituary online. Stan and I were away for a bit this winter. We know he was in hospice. We’re very sad to hear the news. Please accept our sincere condolences. We are very glad to have known Steve. I really admired his intuitive grasp of statistics. He contributed greatly to at least two high school and college career days. We will miss him. Steve and I were graduate students together at Southeast Mass Univ. many, many years ago.  He still is bright figure in my memories for his scintillating sense of humor and deep love for June.  A wonderful good man.  Rest, my friend, after a life well lived.

Larissa and Aliza,  You have been exceptional daughters to an exceptional Dad. He is only gone physically, but will always be in you heart and memory. My heart is with you both, and I will miss your dad's kindness, intellect, and humor. 

How well I remember my little boy (Nat) coming home from his early retreats singing the praises of "chef" Steve - who made the BEST grilled cheese ever! Soon, I joined the retreat team and came to love Steve's  humor, his musical gifts, and his uncanny ability to "get" kids with behavioral quirks and keep them engaged and invested in the community.  Steve was a real community person - in the retreat family, Westport Meeting, his hometown, and the Cape fishing community. But most of all - he was a family man. His love for his dear June was legendary, and extended to his two dear daughters and his so beloved granddaughter and grandsons.  May he be united with those that have gone before.

I spent many August weeks of NEYM with Steve. His calm and gentle manor won over the love of Quaker children and adults. Steve showed an amazing way to be a wonderful listening ear.  He sat on a couch with as many as 10 kids around him while he listened to their words and stories. Then he would reach over the couch for his musical instrument and he would soon have all the kids singing with him. He will be missed.  Margy 

I remember Steve as a man of:  books and letters;
fish and parasites;                                        
food and drink;                                        
graphs and statistics;
music and laughs;
Simpsons and Stooges;
Melville and Solzhenitsyn;
Eddie Merckx and The Tour;
unprogrammed worship and parliamentary procedure;
no pretension and steadfast integrity;
century bike rides and asthma;
stringed instruments, musical bones, and harmonicas;
forecastles and council hearings.

Steve was also:
a Friend and playwright;
once proclaimed the strongest man on the waterfront;
organized and self motivated;
a valued shipmate;
a credit to his family, and his community. 


I am saddened to hear of Steve's passing and wish to add my sincere condolences to his family.  Steve battled his illness and its dire prognosis with determination and grace far longer than most.  His contributions to marine fisheries science, his mentoring of colleagues, his communications skills and enviable career with the Division of Marine Fisheries will not be forgotten.   Even after facing the loss of his wife and family tragedies, Steve attended our retirees luncheon gathering in Sandwich, providing humor and banter for all.
Many of Steve's colleagues have providing warm admiration and recognition of his many professional skills to which I'd like to respectfully add to.
Hopefully, without slighting our former colleagues in marine fisheries management and science, I must recognize Steve's singular ability to transform the complexities of fishery assessment and management into understandable language which was appreciated by those most likely to be affected by the decisions of the state, interstate and federal entities we were associated with.   Steve was also imbued with a strong conservation ethic and didn't mince words about what needed to be done.  Far more than a few harvesters, dealers and others associated with the fishing industry would tell me they finally understood things after a Steve presentation.   I'm proud to have known Steve and know he'll be missed.

Steve was always a pleasure to have working aboard the Gloria Michelle, except when the seas got rough.  Then, he was often found on the rail, or down in the fish hold lying in his oilskins along the centerline, but even then his sense of humor would shine through.  He was a patient teacher who tried (without success) to teach me how to play the harmonica.  He also tried to explain "production foregone" to me, but insisted we have espresso and biscuits to enhance the instruction. I'll miss my dory mate, my mentor, my friend.

Steve was one of the first people to welcome me to DMF and the exclusive "NRC misfit club" many years ago. Steve had an insatiable appetite for knowledge and tackling new scientific data sets in a quest to discover their statistical secrets. No matter how busy he was Steve would listen to colleagues' and grad students' project puzzles and share his insights about their scientific questions. He helped me with my graduate work. Most people who worked with Steve at DMF are familiar with the stacks of newspapers of every variety that used to occupy his office.  What most people don't know is that Steve was the supplier of my mom's kitty box paper, as she prefers shredded newspaper to traditional litter and had more cats than she could really afford. I hope this last anecdote isn't considered too distasteful for this solemn platform, but remembering it got me reflecting about our life's ripples. Steve and my mom never met but his passion for knowledge supported her passion for her cats for a long time.  I miss Steve at our lunch outings—how he would always "out Portugy" me by ordering octopus or the most unusual thing on the menu. He will be missed by many. My deepest condolences go out to Larissa, Aliza and family. Rest in peace my friend.

Steve  was good man - talented, intelligent, and full of humor.  He was my friend and colleague.  I have so many great memories of our time working together on the Resource Assessment Project in the late 80s, and discussing every possible topic from the lighter side of human behavior to the evolution of parasites, from salt cod recipes to the added benefits of a hot pepper in a can of sardines. I feel privileged to have known him and remain his friend until his passing.  My deepest condolences to Steve's daughters and extended family. 

This was a good man.  One of the best I have ever known.  May he rest in peace, and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.


I will always look for you across the meeting house on “your bench.” We will miss you terribly. We take comfort knowing you are with June in spirit, and that your memory and life live on in your incredible daughters and amazing grandchildren. Play on sweet Friend. We loved you so. Holding your whole family in the light. 

I will always treasure sitting with Steve at hospitality after meeting, talking about sports, usually the Red Sox, at one of those little card tables I would set up.  Love you all and holding you all in the light.  

I had the privelage of working for Steve at MADMF. He was not only my mentor, but my friend. He was one of the most innovative thinkers I have ever known, taking unique approaches to solving problems, and inspiring a sense of intellectual curiousity. That, and tons of detail on interpreting and visualizing results. And being objective with your results as well as those presented to you. I had the honor of speaking on his behalf at his retirement party (you were an easy guy to "roast", having a great sense of humor and being charmingly eccentric), and look fondly on that experience. I also look fondly at our walks in downtown New Bedford, visiting destinations such as the library and the espresso shop, and our regular "Taco Tuesday" lunches. I miss you Steve, and know you've found peace. And I'll make sure to use clearer graphs in the future.

Have known Steve since teen years, which is quite a long time. Really " dove" into his interests, such as biking, walking, and his instruments. Loved food and enjoyed every bite   with accompanying analysis. Probably, the closest to a pacifist, that I have known. 

This quote hung behind Steve's desk at the Division of Marine Fisheries for many years: "As an adolescent I aspired to lasting fame, I craved factual certainty, and I thirsted for a meaningful vision of human life -- so I became a scientist.  This is like becoming an archbishop so you can meet girls."  

It fit him. When I think of Steve, I will most remember his devotion to intellectual rigor, the objectivity of science and the appropriate use of statistics.  And also his sense of humor. And his compassion and kindness, his resilience and devotion.  And the way he pronounced the name of his favorite statistical software, R.

I hope his family and friends will find some comfort knowing he had an influence on those around him. I'm a better person and a better scientist because of Steve. I will miss him.

                                                

Steve was able to decipher a complex problem.  It was truly amazing to see his solutions and to get to work with him.  He also had a love for details, which I appreciate.  I miss sharing an espresso with him.

Steve will always be one of my all time favorite colleagues. I wish I could say that we discussed the complicated statistics of fisheries population estimates. He could have, I could not. Most conversations started with a few complaints, but they always ended with a lot of laughs. We talked about Larissa and Aliza, our gardens, food and eventually cross country skiing. I'll always treasure being one of the lucky people who got to know Steve as a colleague and a friend. 

While it was work conversations that brought us together, it was the life conversations with Steve that I enjoyed and appreciated the most...from figs to espresso to resiliency. May you find peace in your shared memories of a wonderful man.

I worked with Steve for many years at DMF and always appreciated his perspectives, both in science and in life. He introduced me to many New Bedford Portuguese eateries (like "the half-a-chicken place" ! ) and convinced me to start riding my bike to work. It is an honor to have known him.

I have know Steve since 1982 when I met him as a undergraduate  at UMASS Dartmouth.  We eventually worked as colleagues at the Division of Marine Fisheries.  We share the love of music, the Simpsons, and statistics.  He was a great colleague and friend and I will miss him.    

I had many great conversations about codfish, herring, and statistics with Steve. His enthusiasm and sense of humor made him a wonderful colleague. A true pleasure to work with. I can still hear his laugh!

Steve was a wonderful colleague and friend. A talented scientist, he devoted countless hours to the New England Fishery Management Council plan development teams. More importantly, he was the de facto mentor to me and many of our staff. I will never forget his sense of humor and the courtesy he showed to everyone. My condolences to his family.

So sorry for your loss. Steve was a dedicated scientist and  a wonderful and caring person. Rest In Peace my friend ❤️
