William D. Gomes

William D. Gomes, age 98, passed away Friday, November 23, 2012 at Tremont Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in Wareham after a year of declining health. He was the loving husband of Gertrude L. (Chambers) Gomes to whom he had been married for 63 years.

Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Augusto and Maria de Gloria (Dias) Gomes, he lived in Fairhaven most of his adult life.

He worked as a NYC dockworker, a General Motors Operator, and later retired from the Fairhaven Post Office as the head custodian in 1977. Bill served in the United States Army during World War II. He served as the Past Commander and Adjutant of the DAV-Chapter 7 New Bedford, was a member of the American Legion, and a member of the National Order of Trench Rats, serving at one point as The Golden Rodent. Bill and his wife were also longtime members of the Wilbur’s Point Association.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, are his loving daughter, Sherry L. Gomes of Plymouth; his son William C. Gomes of Hollywood, FL; his devoted nephew Daniel Gomes and his wife Claudia of Fairhaven; his brother-in-law Gerald Chambers of Boston, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Joseph Gomes, Mary Ventura, Anthony Gomes, Maria Rose Rosa and Hilda Gomes.

His Funeral will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 11:30 am at the Waring-Sullivan Homes of Memorial Tribute at Fairlawn Mortuary, 180 Washington Street, Fairhaven, MA. Visitation prior from 10-11:30 am. Burial in Riverside Cemetery.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 619 Purchase Street, New Bedford, MA 02740 or to a veteran’s group of one’s choice. The family would like to thank The Tremont Nursing staff for their care and support over the past year.

To The Family of William Gomes

Please accept the condolences of the National Order of Trench Rats on the passing of William. He was a member of The Trench Rats with a very low Membership Number. His number was 620. There have only been about 8300 Trench Rats since the Organization was founded right after World War I. He was one of the oldest members of this Organization. It is known that by his membership in the Trench Rats that he was devoted to the cause of Disabled American Veterans and was an outstanding Person. Please accept our sympathy on the loss of you wonderful husband, father and family man.
