Ora Belle Huff (Barnhart) of Sharpsburg, GA, formerly of Akron, OH went home to be with the Lord Friday March 1, 2019 at the age of 99. She was born September 2, 1919 near Coolville, Athens County, Ohio to Henry Wellington Barnhart and Edith Vista Barnhart (Green) on the family’s farm.

Ora was affectionately known as Belle by her immediate family and friends, and Shorty by her husband Rob. Belle grew up in the country with her 8 sisters and 2 brothers, she being the 7th child of 11 children. Tragically, the family lost their mother Edith in 1928 when Belle was 9 years old and 4 years later their father Henry in 1932 when Belle was about 12.

The older children committed themselves to keeping the family together and near each other as much as possible. The older siblings relocated to Akron in 1925 to find work to support their younger brothers and sisters. Belle in turn relocated to Akron and lived with her older sister Doris and her husband Harold Conklin.

After graduating from Kenmore High School she found work as a nanny with a British family and then worked at Sun Rubber in Barberton. There she met Robert James Huff, whom she would marry June 21, 1942 in Akron, Ohio. She always loved to tell the story of their first date being December 6, 1941, on the evening before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Belle followed “Rob” to California as World War II began and he was drafted into the Lighter than Air Naval Aviation Group. Shorty and Rob served out their duty to the country returning to Akron in 1945 with Margaret, their first child.

Rob resumed his work with Firestone and Belle secured the home front. Tragically, Belle and Rob lost two full term baby sons, Paul Douglas & James Gayle in 1946 and 1948. Then in 1952, Belle & Rob were blessed with their third son Robert Jeffery Huff.

Belle and Rob remained lifelong Akron residents. They dabbled in real estate while Rob finished his career at Firestone in 1979. After Rob passed in 1989, Belle moved to Georgetown Condominiums where she lived until 2012. It then became necessary for her to relocate to Sharpsburg, GA due to health issues. There she resided with her daughter and son-in-law until her peaceful passing on the first of March 2019.

Belle was preceded in death by seven sisters and two brothers, Florence, Doris, Jane, Helen, Nina, “Tommie”, Donna, Ernie and Cletus.

She is survived by a sister Garnet King (Barnhart), daughter Margaret Ann (Tim) Pattison of Sharpsburg, Georgia; and Robert Jeffery (Pamela) Huff of Akron, Ohio. Grandchildren Benjamin Pattison of Raleigh, NC and Robert James Huff of Akron and Catherine Elizabeth Huff of Cleveland, Ohio and sister-in-law Mary Jane Barnhart. Mrs. Huff leaves a large extended family of loving nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Saturday, March 9th at Rose Hill Funeral Home 3653 W Market St, Akron, Ohio from 11am to 12 noon with Memorial Service to follow. Internment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a gift in Mom’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
