

Virginia taught for 36 years in District 118 Belleville. She earned a Bachelor Degree from McKendree University in Lebanon, IL and two music degrees at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK.
Virginia was an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Belleville, past President of Mu Phi Epsilon and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was particularly proud to be a relative of David Phillips, her revolutionary ancestor, who wintered with George Washington at Valley Forge. She was a member of the Daughters of Naomi and life member of Illinois PTA.
Her love of music lead her to be a church soloist, choir director, soloist with the Belleville Philharmonic and the Jewish Symphony in St. Louis.
Virginia is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Lawrence “Larry” R. W. Barthel. They were married at the Methodist Church in Lebanon, IL on July 8, 1950. He died September 22, 2006. Her parents, Olin L. and Stella, nee Chapple, Phillips; brother, Earl S. Phillips and her niece, Carolyn Phillips, also precede her in death. Survivors include her son, Michael (Judy) Barthel of Troy, IL; grandchildren, Kathy Barthel of Maryville, IL, Pat Barthel of Breese, IL, Jennifer (John) Weyant of Freeburg, IL and Jamie Barthel of Troy, IL; great-grandchildren, Sean and Rebecca Barthel of Texas and Ruby Rose and Westin Weyant of Freeburg, IL; nieces, Dolores (Larry) Conrad of Fairview Heights, Janice (Francis) Martin of Swansea, IL and Elizabeth, also her Godchild, (Larry) Rutledge of Belleville, IL.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at 11:30am in Trinity United Church of Christ, 47 N. Douglas Ave., Belleville, IL 62220 with Pastor Tim Reed officiating. Visitation will be held in the church from 10:00am until time of service. Interment to follow in Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL. Memorial contributions can be made to Trinity United Church of Christ.
