Beartiz Sarmiento, 94, peacefully passed away on Thursday January 31, 2019. She was born on July 17, 1924 in Bogota, Colombia: the daughter of the late Jorge and Georgina (Ezguerra) Rozo. She married Jaime Sarmiento on July 19, 1947 in Bogota, who preceded her in death on April 22, 1996. Beatriz graduated from high school and began working at the Territorial Credit Institute as a Bookkeeper. She then married her husband, Jaime, and became a housewife. The couple moved to New York and later Virginia where they both hosted many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. In Virginia, Beatriz realized a life-long dream and finally became a mother. Besides being a wonderful homemaker she was also an active participant in the St. Timothy’s Woman’s Guild. The family later moved to Florida where Beatriz assisted her husband with his Translation work and, ultimately, became his care-giver as well as ran their home while raising their two teen-aged daughters. She was blessed with four grandchildren who adored her and played a very active role in their lives. Her many joys were visiting with her family and friends, playing card games, attending her grandchildren’s many activities, watching the Dolphin’s Dan Marino with her son-in-law, Tony, the World Cup, and her bed-side drawer full of sweets. She is survived by two daughters Diana Sarmiento-Cruz and her husband Anthony Cruz of Edwardsville, IL, and Ann-Marie (Sean) Kong of Miami, FL; four grandchildren James Anthony Cruz, Caroline Sofia Cruz, Julia Marie Kong, and Jessica Marie Kong; four siblings Maria Lucila (Gustavo) Rodriguez, Ernesto (Elva) Rozo, Teresita Rubiano, and Margo Puentes; a special cousin Isabel (Agustin) Nieto; and her many adored nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Jorge Rozo; Brothers- in-Law, German Gomez, Eduardo Rubiano, and Pedro Puentes; Sister-in –law, Paulina Rozo. Funeral Service will be held at 5 pm with visitation to follow until 7 pm on Saturday February 9, 2019 at Lake View Funeral Home in Fairview Heights, IL. Cremation will follow services. Inurnment will take place at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery in Miami, FL, later date to be announced. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Save the Children or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
