Daniel Joseph Selders, age 70, passed away on October 9, 2026. Born May 16, 1956, in Corsicana, Daniel’s life was marked by steady devotion to family, a faithful spirit, and a gentle generosity that made others feel seen and welcomed.
Daniel was born in Dallas, Texas, on May 16, 1956, and in 1968 moved with his family to Belleville, Illinois. He attended BTHS East High School, where he played football, sang in several choirs, helped with stage productions, and served as junior class president for the student council. He later graduated from SIU Carbondale and hoped to become a teacher. After completing some student teaching, Daniel accepted an opportunity to become a Radio Shack manager, ultimately running several stores throughout the St. Louis area—work that reflected his resilience, thoughtful leadership, and kind-hearted way with people.
In 1986, Daniel’s car was hit by a train. He was in a coma for some time, but he recovered. Shortly after, his mother passed away, and Daniel moved in with his father, who had suffered a stroke. With quiet strength and steadfast care, Daniel took excellent care of him; family would come by in support, but the two of them were doing incredibly well. After his father passed, Daniel moved in with his oldest brother, Tommy. As Tommy’s work required frequent moves, they eventually returned to Texas. In 2018, Daniel moved to Missouri to live with his younger brother, Vince, and in time they moved to Corsicana, Texas. Throughout every change, Daniel remained a beloved presence—devoted, faithful, and inspirational in the simple, enduring ways he showed up for the people he loved.
Known to many as “Big D,” he carried himself with a beautiful spirit and a generosity of heart that made strangers feel like friends. He truly didn’t know any strangers, greeting everyone with a resounding “HELLO HELLO HELLO,” and punctuating goodbyes with his own familiar “Bah!” Those who knew him will remember not only his thoughtful kindness, but also the steady joy he brought into a room—and how rarely, if ever, he complained.
Big D was a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys and would say he would wear his Bob Lily jersey through the pearly gates. He also enjoyed Cardinal baseball.
Daniel was preceded in death by his mother and father; his sister, Kathy & Royal Fast; his brother, Stephen Selders; a niece, Casandra Selders; and a great niece, Piper Hinson. He is survived by two brothers, Tommy & Vince; many nieces and nephews; greats and great-greats; and many cousins.
