Derek Vaughn Welty

January 26, 1944 – May 9, 2025
Obituary of Derek Vaughn Welty
IN THE CARE OF

Lake View Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens

Derek Vaughn Welty, 81, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, May 9, 2025, in Belleville, Illinois.

Derek was born in Hemel Hempstead, England, on January 26, 1944, to the late Vaughn and Edna Welty (nee Godfrey).

Derek graduated from East St. Louis Senior High School in January 1962.

Derek began building his work resume at a young age, delivering newspapers for the East St. Louis Journal (1958 - 1960), followed by a short stint as a grocery store clerk. From December 1962 until July 1963, Derek worked at Boyd's Men's Clothing Store in St. Louis before switching to his final occupation as a painting contractor first at Carwal Modern Interiors (July 1963 - October 1968); and then Parks College of St. Louis University where he retired after 30 years of service (March 1969 - February 1999).

Derek enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He took great pride in keeping and maintaining an immaculate yard. Derek loved the holidays, especially Christmas, and spent hours setting up multiple Christmas Villages every year. He loved playing cards and dominoes with his family, and he was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.

Derek is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jean Welty (nee Willyerd); daughter, Christine Welty-Jose (Neil) of Swansea, Illinois; two sons, Gary Welty (Kathi) of Belleville, Illinois; and Terry Welty (Sharon) of O'Fallon, Missouri; six grandchildren: Sarah Welty, Tyler Welty, Daniel (Haley) Hammoud, Emily Welty, Victoria Welty, Sophia Jose; and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be submitted to Family Hospice of Belleville or the Alzheimer's Association.

A private memorial service followed by burial will be held at Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights, Illinois.
