Dolores Ann Heins, affectionately known to friends and family as “Dee” or “Dee Dee,” passed away peacefully on October 7, 2026, at the age of 88. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of unconditional love, profound faith, and an enduring passion for education.
Born Dolores Ann Toler on September 8, 1938, she grew up to share a beautiful life with her husband, Van N. Heins, whom she married on December 28, 1958. Though Van tragically preceded her in death in 1974, Dolores carried his memory forward with grace, dedicating her life to providing deeply for her family.
A natural educator, Dolores began her career in 1960 and spent 38 years teaching, shaping the minds and hearts of countless students with her patience and wisdom.
Beyond her profession, Dolores was the true cornerstone of her family. She was renowned for creating elaborate Christmases filled with joy, and she cherished family trips to Jekyll Island and Cape Hatteras. A faith-driven woman, she prayed daily for her family and anyone else in need, offering a rare, unconditional love that accepted everyone exactly as they were. Dolores also possessed a deep love for the arts—a gift she intentionally shared with her children and grandchildren, who caught her love for creativity and education and grew to become artists, musicians, writers, and educators.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: Laura, Van Jr. (Lisa), and Matt (Hillary).
She was the devoted grandmother to Joe (Stephanie), Kevin, Roy, Brendan (Madi), Hannah (Alex), Zipporah, Van III (Elizabeth), and Aubrey; and the proud great-grandmother to Delaney, Cedar, and Ellis.
