

He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Freeburg; Teamsters Retirees, Local 50 in Belleville; V.F.W. of Freeburg; a former member of Yorktown Golf Club and the Men’s Club at Clinton Hills Golf Course. He retired as an over-the-road truck driver for E.J. Daughterly of East St. Louis. Donald was a proud World War II veteran who served in the 8th Air Force European Theater stationed in London. He served as a crew member on a B-17. He was honorably discharged in 1945 after 3 years of service. Mr. Surber attended the dedication of the World War II memorial in 2004.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Lorene, nee Cokenauer, Surber; 2 half-sisters, and 3 half-brothers.
Donald is survived by his wife of 66 years, Louise, nee Akers, of Freeburg; two sons, Dr. James (Dr. Rebecca) Surber of Lisle, Ill., Thomas (Diane) Surber of Swansea; one daughter, Patricia (Dr. Stephen) Fritz of Lubbock, Tex.; 8 grandchildren, Andrew (Laura) Fritz of Las Vegas, Nev., Dr. Alexander (Sarah) Fritz of Fitchburg, Wis., Angela (Justin) Lysakowski, Brett Surber, Jessica Surber, Jonathan Surber, Steven Raetz, and Paul (Jenny) Raetz; 7 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Ian, Brandon, and Evan Fritz, Luke Lysakowski, Brooke and Evan Raetz; one sister, Marcella Davis of Alton, Ill., 7 half-brothers and half-sisters from Texas and Mississippi; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Freeburg or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Lake View Funeral Home, 5000 N. Illinois St., Fairview Heights, IL on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011 and from 10:00 a.m. till 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011 at the funeral home.
Services: Funeral service will be on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Crecelius officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Gardens.
