Doris Caldwell

H. Doris Caldwell, 90, of Caseyville, IL, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 18, 2023. She was born on the family farm in Puxico, MO on December 3, 1932 to Samuel and Iva (nee Baker) Julius. She married her husband, Jessie, on July 11, 1949 in Poplar Bluff, MO, and together they had two children.

Doris enjoyed gardening, swinging in the gazebo and watching Cardinals ball games with her husband, and most of all, she treasured spending time with her family. Doris taught Sunday school at First Baptist Church of Hollywood Heights, she worked as a custodian at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for over 25 years, and eventually retired from First Baptist Church of Maryville.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband of 64 years, Jessie Caldwell; siblings, Audie Hayes, David Julius, Marie Ragsdale, Orville “Otto” Julius, Archie Julius, Arvil Julius, Marvin Julius, and Judy Kindrick; and great-granddaughter, Hope Lange.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Tonja Rettinghouse and Vaughn (Linda) Caldwell; grandchildren, Tina (Chapen) Miller, Stephanie (Arthur “L.A.” Lange) Eckmann, Jennifer (Alex Webb) Caldwell, and Ashley (Tim) Lawrence; great-grandchildren, Blaine Bailey, Kaleb French, Alayna Lange, Lathan Lawrence, Lillian Lawrence; great-great-grandchildren, Aiden Bailey, Logan Bailey, Ambelina Bailey, and Cambria Bailey; plus many dear extended family and friends. She was an incredibly loving and sociable woman who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Donations in Doris’ honor can be made out to VITAS Hospice, who provided her with such excellent care.

Visitation will take place on Monday, July 31, 2023 from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM, officiated by Mike Lawrence at Lake View Funeral Home, Fairview Heights, IL. Doris will be laid to rest at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL.
