Dorothy Helen O'Dell, 88, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away on September 3, 2026. Born July 6, 1938, Dorothy will be remembered as a beloved and cherished presence—gentle in spirit, faithful in heart, and devoted to those she loved. Her life reflected quiet bravery and resilience, marked by steady hard work, honesty, and a thoughtful generosity that touched family and friends alike.
Dorothy graduated from high school and attended nursing school briefly before beginning work at a bank prior to marriage. In time, she married her husband, E. Dan, and they shared more than 30 years together. As he served as a career officer, their life included travel and years lived in many places, including overseas—seasons that called for adaptability, loyalty, and strength, which Dorothy met with grace. Family often smiled at the familiar refrain that she loved her four dogs more than she loved her children and husband, a fond bit of humor that sat easily alongside the deep care she showed in countless everyday ways.
A woman of patient skill and steady hands, Dorothy found joy in sewing, gardening, and crosswords, puzzles, and sometimes cooking, but she especially loved embroidery—an art that suited her gentle focus and wise attention to detail. In earlier years, she also gave of herself as a volunteer at a local hospital, offering compassionate service with a selfless spirit.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Carrie Kemper Sr; her husband, E. Dan O'Dell; and her daughter, Tracy Deetscreek.
