Elmer proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring after 24 years of service. He was an avid sports fan, especially college basketball and “his” Mizzou Tigers. He loved to cheer for his hometown team, the St. Louis Cardinals, and was proud to say he was a part of the best fans in baseball. He enjoyed collecting movies and “everything” Disney. He also loved photography, but nothing matched the love he had for his family. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and brother; who will truly be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harvey Syas, a sister-in-law, Gwen McNeal and his mother’s husband, Robert Barnes.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his mother, Hazel Barnes, nee Pirtle, of St. Louis, Missouri; his loving wife of 37 years, Kwang-Lim Pirtle, of Shiloh, Illinois; his children, Lonnie (Kelli) Pirtle, of Panama City, Florida and Crystal (Kenneth) Collins, of Belleville, Illinois; his grandchildren, Jairon and Amya Pirtle; his brothers, William McNeal, of East St. Louis, Illinois, Jeffery (Gladys) Pirtle, Jerry (Yvette) Pirtle, Joe (Vivian) Pirtle, Randle (Eva) Pirtle, and Steven (Tiffaney) Pirtle, all of St. Louis, Missouri; his “grandpuppy”, Mondu; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
