The daughter of Herbert Murphy and Helen Frances Murphy nee Moran
The oldest of five (5) daughters
She attended Kuttawa High School to the eleventh grade.
She married Carnie Lee Glass of Kuttawa on August 19, 1939
Carnie did not let Eunice go back to school to graduate. She was disappointed with this as her family doctor was going to pay to send her to nursing school to have a career in nursing.
Their first son, Donnie Lee Glass, was born in Kuttawa on July 17, 1940
Since farming and work was slow in Kuttawa, they moved to East St Louis, Illinois in 1941. Carnie worked at an iron company that made tool and die molds for train wheels and other train parts.
Eunice continued to be a homemaker at this time.
Their first daughter, Bonnie Louise Glass, was born December 30, 1941.
Their third child, Ronnie Gene Glass, was born July 21, 1944.
The family moved to Alorton, Illinois in the year of 1947.
To help with finances Eunice went to work at Swift and Company in East St Louis. Later she worked in the shoe department at Stix Baer and Fuller (like Macy’s) in St. Louis. Still later she worked at the neighborhood grocery store in Alorton as a clerk/cashier. Throughout these years she also sold Stanley Home Products and Avon Products.
During this time Eunice and Carnie started a second family.
Their fourth child (third son), Bobbie Joe Glass, was born July 11, 1957 and fifth and last child, Tammie Renee Glass, was born January 5, 1962.
After Bobbie and Tammie got a little older she worked for the Metro East Journal as a contracted bundle hauler. Bobbie and Tammie also helped her with the papers. No matter what the weather, people had to get their newspapers (much to the dismay of Bobbie & Tammie sometimes---stuck in the snow, flat tires, rain, and all including trying to be robbed of their money!!!) and if anyone went to her asking for help, she would give you (them) her last dime. She later worked for
the East St. Louis School District as a cafeteria cook. After cooking for the school students she would talk to them about life and help them with their schoolwork.
Eunice loved to work out doors with Carnie in the vegetable gardens and her flower gardens.
She also had a love for animals. She had raised two (2) collie dogs, when Bobbie and Tammie were little. Before Bonnie was married in August 1963, one of the collies brought home three (3) kittens (one at a time) that some kids had rounded in the mud. She washed them in the sink, but due to the hot weather only one survived on August 3. They thought this was a female, named her Tina, to find out later it was a male cat, so changed the name to Tina-Tom.
Still later Eunice raised Doberman Pinchers, this was quit a chore that Bobbie and Tammie helped with besides doing the paper route for the Metro East Journal.
From Alorton, Eunice and Carnie moved to Belleville on Eiler Road, considered “Their Farm”, this was after all the kids were married and on their own. Over the years of gardening and working Carnie has worked for and retired after 25 years with General Motors. Carnie was taken home to our Lord on March 23, 1997 at the age of 80 years young.
Eunice still had a few dogs at the farm, but the latest critters were again three (3) kittens that Donnie found in the garage that did not have their eyes open this was six or seven years ago. The mother cat did not come back for them and the Humane Society would not take them since their eyes were not open. So Eunice bottle feed them with a doll baby bottle and raised them as her kids.
Eunice loved all of her children and her grandchildren. She is leaving a void in their lives as she has gone home to be with her Lord.
Eunice loved to garden, she always had beautiful flowers growing, she loved animals especially her dogs and cats.
Eunice is preceded in death by her husband Carnie Lee Glass, who passed away on March 23, 1997; parents, Herbert and Helen Murphy;
Surviving are her children, Donnie Lee (Janet) Glass of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Ronnie Gene (Barbara) Glass of Belleville, Illinois , Bobbie Joe (Patti) Glass of Glen Carbon, Illinois, Bonnie Louise (Allen) Watters of Freeburg, Illinois and Tammie Renee (Rodney) Thomas of Cahokia, Illinois, 19 grand children; 11 great grand children and 7 great great grandchildren; sisters, Annie Kelso of Abilene, Texas, Opal (Mike) Stenitzer of Belleville, Illinois and Mary (Paul) Wilfong Cahokia, Illinois.
