

Ewald proudly served his country in the United States Army, by volunteering at the age of 18 years old. He courageously served at D Day and the Battle of the Bulge. It was during the war, in France, where he met the love of his life, Ginette. After six months, they were married and adored each other for 64 years. He worked for Ameren UE for 42 years and retired at the age of 59. He was an active member of the Smithton Senior Club in Smithton, Illinois for the last six years. He also enjoyed antiquing, attending flea markets, and doing yard work. He was a loving uncle, brother, and friend; who will truly be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ginette A. Matt, nee Osche; his parents, John and Martha, nee Peterkit, Matt; his sisters, Bertha Cipolla, Emma Baron, Olga Laughlin, Ann Ishme, Lena Huebner, and Martha Kurtz; and a brother, Emil Matt.
Surviving is his sister, Alma Hatzl, of Freeburg, Illinois; his beloved caretakers and niece and nephew, Theresa “Terry” and Lloyd Voyles; his dear friend, Gale Dixon; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016 and from 9 to 11 a.m., Friday, October 7, 2016 at Lake View Funeral Home, Fairview Heights, Illinois.
Funeral: Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 8, 2016 at the funeral home with Rev. Charles West officiating. Interment will be held in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
