

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was retired from North American Cold Storage in East St. Louis and was a member of American Legion Post 710 in New Douglas. He was a hard worker who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving is his wife of almost 63 years, Colleen June Ellis, nee Melton; two sons, Gilbert D. (Diane R.) Ellis of New Douglas and Randall (Teresa) Ellis of Alton; two daughters, Linda L. (Robert Turner) Ellis of Granite City and Patricia Odom of New Douglas; a sister, Dolores Snider of Livingston, Ill.; nine grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert R. Sr. and Louise M.G., nee Passig Ellis; a son, Gary Ellis; and two brothers, Lawrence and Harold Ellis.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at Lake View Funeral Home, Fairview Heights, Ill., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10. Interment will be at Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights.
