He was born on February 1, 1931 in St. Louis, MO, the son of the late Armin H and Doris (Leunig) Wangelin.
Gus married Nancy A Noll on July 4, 1953 in Belleville.
Mr. Wangelin was the owner of the Wangelin Insurance Agency, which was founded by his grandfather in 1885. He retired from the insurance business in 1995. He graduated from Belleville Township High School and Milliken University. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Belleville, where he had served as Deacon and President of the Board of Trustees. He also served as Chairman of the Belleville St Clair Region of the Red Cross and as Vice-Chairman of the Greater St. Louis Area Red Cross Chapter, President of the Belleville Downtown Optimist Club and President of the Belleville Jaycees. He was also a member of the United Fund Board, a member of the Elks Club, and a Board Member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was the Chairman of the Speakers Bureau for the successful referendum for the Class 1 Junior College. In 1967 he was awarded the coveted Distinguished Service Award by the Belleville Jaycees. In 1964 he worked on the Memorial Hospital Building Fund Campaign and was elected to the Hospital Board in 1966. During his time on the Hospital Board, he served on the Executive Committee, Memorial Group Board, Memorial Hospital Board and Chairman of the Foundation Board as well as various committees of these boards. Gus was also a Counselor with the Score Organization which assists individuals in their efforts to start small businesses.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, he is survived by a daughter Lauren K Wangelin-Wolin and her husband George Wolin; several nieces, nephews and extended family who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Randall Steven Wangelin; a brother Allan Joe Wangelin; a sister Jean Paul.
Visitation will be from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 12 pm on Saturday June 16, 2018 at Lake View Funeral Home in Fairview Heights, IL.
Burial will follow at Lake View Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights, IL.
