

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Jonell Arbogast, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who peacefully departed this world at her home on July 6, 2026, in the loving presence of family. Born on September 20, 1932, in the County of Montgomery, Illinois, Mary was a beacon of warmth and kindness throughout her 93 years of life.
Mary was the cherished daughter of Edward M. McReaken and Bessie Irene (Frey) McReaken, who instilled in her the values of love, resilience, and humility. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Robert J. Arbogast, her parents Edward and Bessie, and her brothers, Burl L. McReaken (Mary), Owen McReaken, and stepsister Carol Sue Tillman.
Mary's legacy continues through her beloved step-son, Robert B. Arbogast (Terry), step-daughter Donna Payne (David) who, alongside his family, shared countless cherished memories with Mary. She was the proud grandmother of six, including Tammy Breeden, Angie Burton (David), Cindy Killian (Gerald), Timothy Arbogast (Jackie), Michael Arbogast, Matthew Payne, and Taryn Mazur (Nick), each of whom carries forward her spirit of compassion and joy.
A graduate of Serento High School, Mary was a dedicated homemaker following her marriage to Robert. Her industrious
nature also saw her contributing to various factories in her early years, where she honed her skills in sewing and envelope manufacturing.
Mary was known for her love of bowling, amassing numerous ribbons and trophies over the years. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel widely across the United States, with cherished visits to France and Germany. Mary's life was filled with the love of friends and family, and she was often found engrossed in card games, board games, or word puzzles. Her home was a testament to her meticulous nature, always kept ship-shape and welcoming to all who visited.
A Graveside service celebrating the life of Mary will be held on July 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, 5000 N. Illinois Street, Fairview Heights, IL 62208.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospice, especially nurse Logan, Barbara Clements, Tammy Meador, Vanessa McReynolds, and Angie Burton, for their unwavering support and care during Mary’s final days.
