Mary Ann began her career as a professional secretary at a law office before dedicating many years to working in the school office at St. Philip’s Grade School in East St. Louis. Following her working years, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising her children and was actively involved in their school sports and activities.
In her senior year of high school, Mary Ann met Donald Czekanski, and it was love at first sight. They were united in marriage on November 11, 1958, and shared 64 wonderful years together.
Mary Ann had a deep love for arts and crafts and spent many evenings with friends creating beautiful ceramic pieces. She was also an avid crocheter, making countless ponchos, blankets, and other treasured items for her loved ones. Known for her delicious cupcakes, she brought joy to many gatherings. Mary Ann especially loved hosting celebrations, including her cherished St. Patrick’s Day and New Year’s Eve parties, always complete with festive decorations and plenty of balloons. She enjoyed dancing, listening to music, and engaging in lively conversation—her vibrant personality ensured that any room she entered was filled with warmth and energy.
She was preceded in death by her father, Russell Elder; her mother, Martha Kay Elder; her stepfather, Marion Seibert; her brother, Robert Elder; her husband, Donald Czekanski; and her son, Stephen Czekanski.
