Mary Ellen Mayer, nee Oliver, of Columbia, IL has departed this life on September 16 2021 at the age of 94. She was born August 4, 1927 in East St. Louis, IL. She lived in Columbia for thirty-three years. Before moving to Columbia she resided in Dupo, IL.
Mary Ellen is survived by her daughter, Leslie Russell, Oakville, MO, and son, John Lanterman, Dupo, IL, 3 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elsie (nee Kelly) and John Oliver, 3 sisters, Lavern, Esther and Dorothy and a brother, Glenn Oliver.
Mary Ellen retired from a brokerage firm where she had an extensive career that spanned 20 years; first as a margin clerk and then as head cashier. She was previously employed by Monsanto Company in Sauget, IL.
Mary Ellen was a member of Columbia First Baptist Church for over 20 years. She participated in the church choir and adult bible study classes. She was previously a long-time member of Winstanley Baptist Church in Belleville, IL where she taught Sunday school. She always strived to teach by example what Christian love should be and often said that some of her fondest memories were the times she spent with her church family.
For her 90th birthday a surprise party was hosted by her son and daughter-in-law. Many friends and relatives attended the grand celebration.
As past president of the Columbia Woman’s Club (1991-1993) she initiated many worthwhile projects such as bridge lessons, a card marathon, house tours, etc. She also supported annual club programs such as the Senior Girls Brunch honoring graduating high school girls, the annual card party and Christmas party. She invited a host of interesting speakers to club meetings. Mary Ellen was dedicated and determined in her endeavors and took pride in striving to do her best.
Mary Ellen will be remembered for her loving heart, understanding ways, her warmth, wit and wisdom that inspired all who knew her. As she journeyed through life she chose activities and attitudes prayerfully to help determine the quality of her life pilgrimage. She was an avid reader, believed in living life to the fullest and embraced life’s journey as an adventure. Part of the adventure was being a world traveler. While in China she climbed “The Great Wall of China." She was proud of her time spent dancing and being entertained by famous movie star Steve McQueen.
Mary Ellen was a vibrant, dynamic woman who will truly be missed by all who knew her.
