Roy was born on July 8, 1955, in Charleston, South Carolina, to the late Joe Larry and Connie Young Gilbreath. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Sherry Surber Gilbreath, with whom he shared 29 years of marriage.
Roy is survived by his wife, Sherry; his three children, Roy Gilbreath Jr., Catherine “Cassie” Nowels, and Darsey Moritz and her husband Joshwa Moritz; and his two cherished grandchildren, Cooper and McKenzie Moritz. He is also survived by his brother, David Gilbreath and his wife Jeanne; his sister, Judith Gilbreath; and several nephews, great-nephews and nieces, mother-in-law Betty Surber, along with extended family members. His son-in-law, Christopher Nowels, preceded him in death.
Roy proudly served his country in the United States Navy, retiring with the rank of Commander. His distinguished military career reflected his dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving his nation. Following his Navy retirement, Roy continued his service through U.S. government contract work, including assignments in Afghanistan and Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His patriotism and willingness to serve extended far beyond his years in uniform.
As an avid golfer, Roy also managed and was part owner of a Golf and Country club in Austell, Georgia. In his retirement years, Roy enjoyed time on the course, perfecting his swing and sharing the game with friends and family. Yet, above all his interests and accomplishments, Roy treasured his family and his faith in God. His faith was a source of strength and joy throughout his life, and the love he shared with those around him will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
Roy will be remembered for his years of service, his love for his family, and the faith that guided his life. He was a generous and caring father and sibling that was always there to lend an ear and help at any time. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
