Shirley R Holmes

Shirley was a January 1951 graduate of East St. Louis Senior High School. Early in her life she was employed by Laclede Steel, Rawlings Athletic Company and Miss Hickey’s School of Business. Later, and for, many years she was the office manager of Upchurch Insurance in Cahokia, IL. For several years after, she worked in the offices of Lana and Shelby Pollack. In the early1980s she owned and operated The Bookshoppe on N. High in Belleville. In 1988 she and her husband founded Educational Concepts, Ultd., a pre-licensing school in Belleville, and she served as operating CEO and teacher until the business was sold to Thomas Ripperda.

She was a long-time member of Caseyville Crossroads Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. At various times she was a church school teacher, a choir member, and chaired or served on many committees of the church. At the time of her death, she was co-chair of the Hospitality Committee and was an assistant Financial Secretary.

She was the daughter of William Lloyd and Hazel, nee Renollet, Carmichael. She was the spouse of Dr. Ken Holmes and mother of Dennis Michael Holmes.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ken; her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Diane Holmes; her two grandsons, Jason (Holmes) and Kare Joelner and Jonathan (Holmes) and Beth Joelner, her three great-grandchildren, Rylie Joelner, Will Joelner, and Cayden Joelner; her sister Adeline Wallace Waldron; her nieces Linda (Ted)Waldron Hagadorn of Dupo and Cecelia (Robert) Waldron Zavaglia of Denver, and Margaret Roe of Washington, D.C. Also surviving are great-and great-great nieces and nephews and a host of good friends, including Ann, Judy, and Mary.

Funeral: A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Saturday, April 22 at 3:00 p.m. at Crossroads Christian Church, 2915 N. 89th in Caseyville, Ill.
