William Louis Behnen

William Louis Behnen, 82, of Lebanon, Illinois, passed away on July 15, 2026. Born on February 22, 1944, to his father, Joseph H. Behnen, and mother, Verna A. Schneider who both preceded him in death. William lived a life marked by steady devotion to the people and places he cared for, and by a spirit that could meet responsibility with warmth and good humor.

William graduated from Belleville Cathedral, carrying forward the work ethic and determination that would shape the years to come.

He served in the Army as an MP, and he also played football—bringing the same discipline and drive to each commitment he took on. In 1972, William began a long and faithful chapter with the Fraternal Order of Eagles, serving as manager from 1972 to 2024. Through years of hard work and steadfast leadership, he helped build and move the organization from East St. Louis to Shiloh, leaving a lasting imprint through effort, persistence, and care for community.

William’s interests reflected both his energy and his enjoyment of life: NASCAR, playing darts, and softball were among the pastimes that kept him engaged and connected with others. In his earlier years he enjoyed spending time outdoors, camping and boating. He was also a dedicated St. Louis Blues season ticket holder, a loyal fan who appreciated the camaraderie and tradition of the game.

William was the loving husband to his late wife Teresa. He was a dear brother to Jack and his late sister Susie. He was a cherished Papaw to Cole, Bailey, and Devin. William is survived by Sharon, the loving mother to his two daughters, Brandy and Shelley, and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family extends sincere gratitude and thanks to those who have shown support, and a special thanks to his dear friend Pat for her care.

In remembering William, many will hear his familiar words echoing with the same wit and resolve that so often accompanied them: “Betchya a hundred” and “You better cowboy up.”
