He was born in the historic city of Hotin, Moldova and raised in Transylvania, in the Făgăraș region & Victoria city. He was the son of the late Prohor Vatamanu and Nadejda Scripnic Vatamanu.
Alexandru was the beloved husband of the late Valeria (née Reverend Pascal and Presibitera Emilia); loving father of Ovidiu Lucian Vatamanu (Esmeralda); cherished grandfather of Ingrid Maria Vatamanu (Alexandru Popa) and Irina Artemis Mezin; and proud great-grandfather of Lucian Mezin. He was the dear brother of Margareta Lazar and Lenuta Vatamanu, and the late Nicolae, Mihai, and Victor Vatamanu; and the adored uncle of many nieces and nephews.
A highly accomplished aerospace engineer and pilot, Alexandru devoted over 30 years to one of Romania’s largest aircraft company and also served as Chief Quality Manager of the biggest metallurgical plant in Eastern Europe in Galati. Beyond his professional achievements, he was a national chess champion and a man known for his positivity, happy personality, and kindness — qualities that inspired everyone around him.
Alexandru was a dedicated member of St Mary Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in Cleveland. He most cherished his time with his family, especially son, his granddaughters and great-grandson Lucian.
Among his fondest memories were the times he and his son, Ovidiu, spent hiking together in the mountains of Romania, Fagaras Mountains.
