Elizabeth Kidd Haggerty, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, at the age of 81. Born at Lennox Castle in Lennoxtown, Scotland, on October 2, 1943, Elizabeth’s life was one of love, adventure, and an insatiable curiosity for the world around her.
She is survived by her devoted husband, John Haggerty; her loving daughter, Megan Wellman (née Haggerty), and son-in-law, John Wellman; and her cherished daughter-in-law, Christina Haggerty (née Holstein). She also leaves behind her dear siblings: Tom Jack of Glasgow, Scotland; Agnes "Nan" Cleary (née Jack) of New York, New York; and Christine Kettle (née Jack) of Ontario, Canada, and her husband, Alexander Kettle. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Ian Haggerty; her brother-in-law, John Cleary; her sister-in-law, Flora Jack (née Harvey); and her parents, William and Agnes (née Barclay) Jack.
Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, Elizabeth met John Haggerty at the age of 17, and together, they embarked on a lifelong journey of love and partnership. They immigrated to Canada in 1966 before eventually settling in the United States in 1968. Determined and ambitious, Elizabeth earned her bachelor’s degree in Canada and later obtained her master’s degree from Cleveland State University in Ohio. She dedicated her professional life to education and mentorship, working as an instructor at Lorain County Community College, an education advisor for the University of Michigan, and later as a real estate agent.
More than anything, Elizabeth was a devoted and nurturing mother and grandmother. She and John built a warm and loving home, raising their two children, Ian and Megan, with a strong foundation of love, laughter, and adventure. As a grandmother, she showered her four grandchildren—Pidge and Ian Haggerty and Nicholas and Nathan Wellman—with unwavering love, wisdom, and a sense of wonder about the world. She was a storyteller, a teacher, a guide, and a source of endless encouragement, always inspiring her family to embrace curiosity and resilience.
She found joy in museums, lively conversations, and the simple pleasure of discovering something new. Her passion for travel and culture was contagious, and through the journeys she shared with her family, she created unforgettable memories. She turned every adventure into a story, enriching the lives of those she loved with experiences that will be cherished for generations.
Elizabeth Haggerty was a woman of intellect, warmth, and humor. She lived life on her own terms—seeking knowledge, embracing adventure, and, most of all, cherishing her family. Her legacy will live on in the lives of those she touched, and her memory will be held close in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A visitation for Elizabeth will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with a funeral service beginning at 5:00 PM, at Corrigan Craciun Funeral Home, 20820 Lorain Road, Fairview Park, Ohio 44126.
