Augustine Pham Van Lan was born on 5 October 1937 in Thai Binh, North Vietnam. He was educated at the Minor Seminary of Bui Chu, Buffalo Preparatory Seminary, New York, Borromeo College, Wickliffe, St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 18 May 1963 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Bishop Clarence E. Elwell ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Saigon. He was incardinated to the Diocese of Cleveland on 11 July 1979.
Father Lan served as Parochial Vicar of St. Joan of Arc, Chagrin Falls during Graduate Studies at John Carroll University (1963-1964). Fr. Lan served as Parochial Vicar at Sacred Heart, Highbridge, New York during Graduate Studies at Fordham University (1964-1972). He served as Parochial Vicar at Holy Family, Manhattan, New York (1972-1974). From 1974 until 1976 Fr. Lan was a Parochial Vicar at St. Patrick, Verplanck, New York and he served as a religion teacher at St. Patrick School. While writing his dissertation, Fr. Lan was a guest lecturer at Fordham University (1976-1977). On 8 August 1977 Fr. Lan was appointed Director, Vietnamese-American Apostolate with residence at St. Stephen, Cleveland. Fr. Lan was the Resettlement Director, Migration & Refugee Services (1984). On 10 March 1992 the Vietnamese Apostolate was transferred to St. Boniface. On 28 May 1997 Fr. Lan was appointed Administrator pro tem of St. Boniface, Cleveland and was named Pastor of St. Boniface on 22 August 1997. Fr. Lan retired on 1 July 2012.
In the Vietnamese tradition there will be a Mass and wake in the Vietnamese language on Wednesday, 22 July 2020 at 7:00 p.m. A Mass and wake for the English speaking Vietnamese community will be held on Thursday, 23 July 2020 at 7:00 p.m. A bi-lingual Mass will be held on Friday, 24 July 2020 at 7:00 p.m. All Masses will be celebrated in St. Boniface Church, 3545 W. 54th Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44102.
The Diocesan celebration will begin with the wake on Friday, 24 July 2020 in St. Boniface Church, 3545 W. 54th Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44102 at 3:00 p.m. with Vespers and will continue until 7:00 p.m. Bishop Martin Amos, Bishop Emeritus of Davenport, Iowa will be the presider and Fr. John Manning will be the homilist. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 25 July 2020 in St. Boniface Church at 11:00 a.m. Bishop Roger Gries will be the main celebrant and Father Bau Van Nguyen, S.V.D. will be the homilist. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
