Frederick W. Hammer, Jr. age 91, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2020 with his wife of 67 years, Cherry, by his side. Fred was born on October 29, 1928 in Cleveland, OH to the late Frederick and Emma (Goerz) Hammer. As an Army Veteran who served in Korea, Fred served the City of Fairview Park as a Firefighter, Safety Service Director and eventually retired as Assistant Fire Chief after 34 years of service. Fred took great satisfaction as a long standing member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Fairview Park, OH serving in various capacities and always having faith.

Fred is survived by his wife, Cherry (Dodd) Hammer who together provided life paths for four children, Mark (Dawn) Hammer of McMurray, PA; Melinda (Steve) Cepec of Spencer, OH; Marilee Hammer (Ricky Clifton) of Denver, CO; Marty (Gretchen) Hammer of Midlothian, VA and grandson Bradley Hammer of Columbus, OH.

Also survived by grandchildren; Nicole (Ronnie) Showah, Rachel Hammer, McKenna Hammer, Mitchell Hammer, Kyle Hammer and extended nieces and nephews.

Fred was an avid sports enthusiast and followed his favorites of the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes. He enjoyed his athletic talents and lettered in High School basketball, baseball, football and track. Even continuing to play softball into his 50’s and bowling afterwards.

Much time was involved investing into the Fairview Park Community; Messiah Lutheran Church lifetime membership, Fairview Park Athletic Club, coaching youth football and baseball, providing CPR training to the community. Fred was honored with the Fairview Park Citizen of the Year award with his wife due to their community involvement.

After early retirement at 54, he and Cherry enjoyed much traveling and many winters in Naples, Florida.

Arrangements will be at Corrigan Craciun Funeral Home, 20820 Lorain Rd, Fairview Park, OH on 1 – 3PM Saturday May 9. All Covid 19 procedures will be followed. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the American Diabetes Association.

A Celebration of Fred’s life will be planned at a later date after quarantine restrictions have been lifted.
