Gertrude was born December 21, 1925 in Cleveland, the daughter of the late David Maat and Hilda (VanderSluis) Maat. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles H. McDonald; loving mother of Charles D. (Carol) McDonald, Timothy (Kim) McDonald and Trudi Reeder (Dennis, deceased); cherished grandmother of David McDonald, Matthew McDonald, Liam (Samantha) McDonald and Adam Reeder and great-grandmother of Sloan, Luca and Stella; sister of the late Edith (John) Fleming; Herman (Lois) Maat and Bernard (Marilyn) Maat; adored aunt and friend of many.
Gert was a longtime volunteer starting at Bayview Hospital in Bay Village and then St John’s Westshore in Westlake, Ohio. She served as the Auxiliary President there for several years.
Gert’s parents emigrated from the Netherlands through Ellis Island and her Dutch heritage was always an important part of her life. Gert loved to travel and was able to visit Holland and family members that still live there. She had many friends and liked to play cards at the Rocky River Senior Center with a special group of them. She enjoyed playing tennis, golf, bowling and gardening in her yard but most of all she enjoyed being with family and friends. She was especially proud of and happy to be with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
And, she was completely cherished by her family and everyone who knew her.
