On Sunday, February 7th, 2021, Irene M. Ray (76) of Westlake, OH passed away. Irene “Sam” or “Rene” as she preferred to be called, was preceded in death by Jack and Barbara Mahoney (parents), Lorn and Joe Mahoney (brothers) and is survived by her sister Margaret “Peg” McNamara. She was the beloved mother of Daniel and Kelly Ray, Shannon Fabec (Ray) and her husband Bryon Fabec. She adored her two grandchildren Jacob and Emily Ray. She was an incredible Aunt/Great Aunt to many nieces and nephews, and was blessed with friends all over the country!
Irene was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and became a Flight Attendant with United Airlines at the age of 21. Due to poor business practices in the 1960s, she was forced to give up her dream job in order to start a family. She was a natural at performing the unrecognized duties as a military spouse; moving her family every few years, hosting parties, and ensuring her children always felt accepted into their new environments.
In 1984, Rene was blessed with the opportunity to re-join the Friendly Skies of United Airlines where she was able to use her incredible sense of humor on a daily basis while taking care of her passengers. In 1988, she returned home to Cleveland to be closer to family. Prior to retiring in 2008, she worked her way up to become an International Flight Attendant, which afforded her the opportunity to see the world.
