Joanne Frances Gregory

JOANNE FRANCES GREGORY (nee Kralik), dearly beloved mother of David J. Gregory, called to heaven at the age of seven in April 1966, Barbara Gregory Lyman and Lois J. Gregory. Doting grandmother of Clare and Lizzie Lyman, and Sean and Christopher Baxley. Cherished daughter of Joseph F. Kralik and Irene Durkis Morey (nee Kozsey). Her husband, Warren P. Gregory, preceded her in death in May 2003. She is survived by her brothers James Durkis of Coral Springs, FL, and Robert Durkis of Atlanta, GA. Joanne passed away peacefully with family and friends at her side on August 1, 2018, at the age of 86. Her extraordinary life of love and devotion centered around her children and grandchildren and her deep Catholic faith. Joanne was a longtime and dedicated friend of the Poor Clares and a volunteer at their convent on Rocky River Drive. Born in Cleveland, she attended Saint Joseph Academy in Cleveland and graduated in 1950 from Gesù School in Miami, FL, as class salutatorian. She attended Notre Dame College in South Euclid, OH, for two years, leaving to take care of her then critically ill father. She worked in the early 1950s as a laboratory technician at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital, where she prepared blood serum samples that supported the research of Nobel Laureate Frederick C. Robbins. After 22 years in commercial loan operations in the banking world, she retired in February 2003 from First Federal Lakewood on Detroit Avenue as executive assistant to the vice president, a position she thoroughly enjoyed. Joanne’s greatest calling, however, was that of mother, an office she performed with perfect love and devotion. She was a meticulous homemaker with a wonderful sense of taste who relished all of her motherly duties. She was a fabulous cook who turned out memorable meals for her family ranging from chicken chasseur to delectable meatloaf and madeleines to strawberry shortcake. A beautiful and gentle soul, Joanne made a great mark in this world through her abiding love, grace, courage and humility and her deep sense of caring for others to whom she gave so generously and selflessly.

I have always loved my Aunt Joanne. Her faith in god and her devotion to her family inspired me during my times when I needed some guidance. She was easy to talk with and I enjoyed her advice and life experiences. I will miss you..
