

He was born in Fall River, a son of Tanya (Litaway) Cummings of Fall River and John Cummings of Bourne, MA. Jay was a lifelong resident of Fall River and a 1992 graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School and a 1996 graduate of Westfield State University, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology. He was a Sergeant with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections at Bridgewater State Hospital and had formerly worked at MCI Cedar Junction.
Jay was active in the community, Co-Founder and President of the Fall River Football Challenge, sponsor of the Durfee High School Athletic Foundation, member of the Dept. of Corrections Tactical Team and was awarded a Humanitarian Award from the Dept. of Corrections and the City of Fall River for rescuing two people from a burning building in Fall River.
Surviving in addition to his mother and father are two sisters; Tonya Jackson-Cummings of New Bedford and Tara Greaney of Holden, MA, two brothers; Kevin J. Cummings of Fall River and Chad P. Cummings of Leroy, NY, step brother; John T. Cummings, Jr. of Bourne and step sister; Constance Cummings of Weymouth, MA and several nieces and nephews and life-long friends, John “ Spike” Burns and Marilyn Burns.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 10AM in Holy Trinity Church, 951 Stafford Rd., Fall River. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Visiting Hours will be Wednesday 4-8PM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT CHERRY PLACE, 178 Winter St., Fall River. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his honor may be made to Fall River Football Challenge Foundation, 811 Tarkiln Hill Rd., New Bedford, MA 02745.
