OBITUARY

Kendrick Maxwell Snyder

September 20, 1949October 1, 2020

Kendrick Maxwell Snyder, age 71, of Westport Harbor, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Anne (Brayton) Snyder to who he has been married for the past 38 years.

Born in Columbus, OH, a son of the late Philip D. and Patricia (Maxwell) Snyder and step-son of the late Dorothy Snyder, he spent his youth in Ohio and lived in Colorado prior to moving to Westport in the early 1970’s.

He was a building contractor and carpenter; the owner of Kendrick Snyder Builder Inc. in Westport, MA. Son of an architect, he had an incredibly skillful attention to design and detail. He was a great mentor to many carpenters, and his “alumni,” the many local youth he employed on summer break. He was a former board member of the Acoaxet Club, the Fall River YMCA and Friends Academy. Kendrick held his private pilot’s license and was a proud owner of a Cessna 182. He was a graduate of Mercersburg Academy, and he attended the University of Colorado.

An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed boating, water skiing, golf, flying and his "garden.". A born entertainer there was never a microphone he didn't gravitate to. You could find him cruising around town in his restored 1964 Olsmobile convertible, top down, dog by his side.

He was the father of the late Philip Danforth Snyder and is survived by two daughters, Catherine Potempa and her husband Patrick Matthew of Nashville, TN, Lucille Snyder of Westport; three grandchildren, Philip, Patrick and Penn; three sisters, Melinda Blake and her husband Benson of IL, Marcia Locke of CA and Nancy Sims of OH; one brother Michael Locke of OH.

Due to current restrictions on public gatherings, his funeral and burial will be private. Contributions in his honor may be made to Angel Flights NE Lawrence Municipal Airport, 492 Sutton Street, North Andover MA 01845 or to Forever Paws, 300 Lynwood St., Fall River, MA 02721.

Kendrick and my brother Charlie met at Mercersburg Academy in the 1960s. He quickly became a member of the Alter family and lived with us on and off from the time I was 8. So when asked how many brothers I had my answer was always “4, two of them are the same age but they’re not twins”
I have so many memories of Kendrick and all of them seem to include my brother Charlie. The two of them seemed inseparable in the 1660s and 1970s and they remained friends for life. During these years they had many adventures together, a few of which they might actually have able to share with their families.
In the 1970s when we all living in Colorado together, I at CU, the others in Raymond’s Resort. I was the far less adventurous, more conventional younger sister basking in the glow of their hippie lifestyle. My biggest adventure at the time? Sneaking them all into my non-coed dorm to take showers since the only running water they had as access to was a stream running in front of their cabin.
In the last 20 years I haven’t seen Kendrick a lot but I kept up with his life through Charlie.

That we all live in a small world was again proven to me a woman I work with at NIH told me she was from Westport. I told her I had a “brother” who lived there and that he was a contractor. When I told her his name was Kendrick Snyder she told me that of course she knew Kendrick because at some point all of her brothers had worked for him. He obviously was a mentor to members of his family and to others who were drawn into his circle.

Kendrick will be missed by all who knew and loved him, his family, extended family and friends. My condolences to Ann, Lucy, Lindy and all the rest of his family and admirers
Love you Kendrick, thanks for being part of my family
