Kvetuse “Kay” Maria Julia Forman Fischer of Fall River died on May 1, 2016 at Brookdale Sakonnet Bay in Tiverton. Born in Königinhof in Eastern Bohemia on May 4, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Josef and Maria Forman. She emigrated to America with her beloved husband, Adolf August Fischer, and her daughter, Barbara, in December of 1953 aboard the Queen Mary.
As her husband preferred not to drive, Kay took the wheel upon her arrival in America and over the years was proud of the many cars she owned – in particular a 2001 silver Audi with which she rarely ventured into the “slow” lane on the highway - or in life.
Trained at business school in Czechoslovakia, Kvetuse was an astute record keeper. Prior to her marriage, she worked in the offices of the Gustav Deutsch Textilwerk in Dvur Kralove, Czechoslovakia. She also assisted her husband in his chemistry lab at United Merchants and Manufacturers textile mill tracking experimental results for 22 years. At home, she put her documentation skills to work keeping ledger books that tracked spending down to the penny – with each birthday gift and weekly grocery trip neatly recorded. The books are a testament not to her thrift but to her generosity.
In the late 1970’s she got caught up in the “aerobics craze” and was a devotee first of the Gloria Stevens Figure Salon, then other area gyms. It was a regimen that she kept up well into her 90’s. It was here that she made some of her most enduring friendships.
And thank goodness for all that exercise because Mama was an incredible cook. Her cakes and cookies could incite a riot over the last piece! She proudly baked the cakes served at all three of her grandchildren’s weddings. She loved her home at 83 Primrose Street where she lived from 1954 until a fall three years ago made it impossible to safely stay there but until she was unable, she visited her home and her kitchen still making Christmas cookies with the help of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Kvetuse was an astute people watcher and generous with a smile and kind word but did not suffer foolishness gladly. She delighted in talking about human nature and was a firm believer in “Pozdě bycha honit.”
She is pre-deceased by her husband and is survived by her daughter, Barbara Fischer Pelletier, and her husband, James of Tiverton, RI; her granddaughters, Ann Strong, and her husband, Joseph, of Barrington, RI; Kim E. Pelletier of Needham, MA; and her grandson, Tiger Pelletier, and his wife, Melissa, of Tiverton, RI. She is also survived by four beloved great-grandchildren: Joshua Pelletier, of Needham, MA; Joseph (JJ) Strong of Barrington, RI; and Samuel and Madison Pelletier of Tiverton.
In light of Kay’s lifelong interest in animal welfare, we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Kay’s name to Placing Paws, PO Box 403, Tiverton, RI 02878 or an animal advocacy group of your choice.
Her Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 9am in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover St., Fall River. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Tiverton. Arrangements are in the care of the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place. To send a tribute please visit: www.waring-sullivan.com
