

Maria C. (Couto) Amaral, “Mary”, age 85, of Westport, MA, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at Charlton Memorial Hospital surrounded by family. She was the wife of Walter S. Amaral to whom she had been married for 66 years.
Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, she and her husband, a Senior Master Sergeant of the U.S. Air Force, were afforded the ability to live in three countries and seven states before settling in Westport, MA to be closer to family. She was the daughter of the late Manuel J. Couto and Maria dos Anjos (Tavares) Couto.
Mary was an avid philanthropist and donated to numerous charities for children, animals, and Veterans. Mary enjoyed sewing, singing, and reading. She was a member of Grace Gospel Church in Somerset, MA, for over 20 years. She shared her love for the Lord Jesus Christ with her family and everyone around her. A natural caretaker with a big heart for the elderly, she cared for her home and was devoted to her children. She possessed a natural talent for growing plants. She fed every animal she could from strays in the neighborhood to the squirrels and birds in her yard- treating them all as her own.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three children, Walter D. Amaral and his wife Debra of Elgin, AZ, Catherine A. Fitch and her husband Steven of Westport, MA, Michelle Amaral and her husband Misael of Fall River, MA, and two grandchildren, John and Rebekah; two brothers, Joseph Couto of New Bedford, MA, and Stephen Couto of South Carolina, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River, MA. Her Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport. MA. Contributions in her honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association MA/NH Chapter, 320 Nevada St., Suite 201, Newton, MA 02460.
