Marie Miles Beckett

Marie (Miles) Beckett, age 96, passed away Tuesday, December 05, 2017 at the Herrick House in Beverly, MA. She was the wife of the late J. Fred Beckett to whom she was married 46 years before his passing in 2008.

Born in Medford, MA, the daughter of the late Edward and Frances (Babineau) Miles, she was a longtime resident of Fall River before relocating to Beverly, MA in 2011, to live near her niece.

A graduate of Medford High School, Class of 1939, she then earned her bachelor’s degree from Tufts University, Class of 1943, and also a master’s degree in education from Tufts. She was the principal of the Wiley School in Fall River for many years before her retirement. Marie viewed every day of her life as an educator as an adventure and a chance to share her love of learning with her students.

A member of the Quequechan Club, she also belonged to the Fall River Country Club and she and her husband Fred enjoyed many summers as members of Baker’s Beach. She and Fred also spent many winter months after retirement in Treasure Island, FL.

Marie is survived by: her niece Lisa Miles McNamara and husband Frank; a grand-niece, Carolyn Miles McNamara, her husband Kim Wettlaufer and their children Miles and Leila Wettlaufer; and two grand-nephews, William McNamara and Michael McNamara. She was the sister of the late E. Robert Miles.
