Born in Newport News, Virginia, a son of the late James and the late Clementine (Redcross) Edmonds, he lived in San Diego, California, Hawaii and Maine before moving to Tiverton over forty five years ago.
A graduate of Huntington High School he earned an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University.
He retired from the United States Navy as Chief Petty Officer in 1971. After his retirement he worked in a commissary in San Diego and at the Newport Naval Base in the laundry department and at the Naval Exchange. He also enjoyed taking business courses online.
A member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church and a skilled cook, he volunteered at church in the kitchen for many years. In addition to cooking, Mr. Edmonds enjoyed going to flea markets and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 5592 in Tiverton.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Robert L. Edmonds, Jr. of Tiverton; one grandson, Evan Edmonds and his girlfriend Rebecca Lorusso; three great-grandchildren, Emani J. Edmonds, Nazara Edmonds and Luciano A. Lorusso Edmonds and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Joyce Pulley and Lorenzo Edmonds.
His Visitation will be held on Monday, April 16, 2018 from 9:30 to 10:30AM in the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 146 Hanover St., Fall River, Massachusetts, followed by a Service at 11:00AM. Burial with military honors will be at 1:30 PM in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, Rhode Island. Contributions may be made to Bethel A.M.E.
