Born in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late John T. Elder and the late Jessie (Holland) Elder. She graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School in 1937 and from Truesdale Hospital Nursing School in 1941.
Ruth worked as a registered nurse at Truesdale and Charlton Memorial Hospitals devoting the last years before retirement to the needs of new mothers and babies. She was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's, St. John's, and Church of the Holy Spirit. Ruth sang in the choir and was a member of the Altar Guild. She hosted dinners after monthly prayer group meetings and served as clerk of the vestry. Ruth was a member of Truesdale Hospital Nurses Alumni Association and the Women's Club of Newport County.
Ruth's generous spirit touched many lives and her raisin squares delighted all. She was a devoted mother, engaging neighbor, and good friend. She knitted beautifully and prolifically. She loved to drive and travel, but also hosted dinners frequently for friends and family. There was always room at the table at Ruth's. house.
She is survived by two sons, John S. "Jack" Baker and his wife Angelika of Barrington, Eric H. Baker and his wife Joann of Tiverton; one daughter, Margaret C. Baker of Hancock, NH; six grandchildren, Becca Baker, Rebecca Webb, Tom Webb, Beatrix Mattyasovszk, Zachary Baker-Salmon, Sam Baker-Salmon; four great-grandchildren; Nicholas, Olivia, Jack Henry, Oskar and many nieces and nephews. She was sister of the late John T. Elder, Ph.D.
Her Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 from 10:00 to 11:00AM in the Church of the Holy Spirit, 160 Rock Street, Fall River, followed by her Funeral Service at 11:00AM. Relatives and friends invited. Contributions in her honor may be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit, 160 Rock Street, Fall River, Massachusetts 02720. Burial in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton.
