Theodore J. Bernier, “Ted,” age 82, passed away, Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Simonne (Bernier) Bernier, to whom he has been married for the past 56 years.
Born in Central Falls, Rhode Island, a son of the late Theodore and Emma (Shank) Bernier, he was a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of the former Prevost High School and later attended Bradford Durfee Technical Institute. He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment in Grafenwoehr, Germany as Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany) and the Expert Infantry Badge.
A Supervisor for the Good Year Tire and Rubber Company in New Bedford for many years, he was a multi-year recipient of the Top Ten Club Award. After retirement he worked as a Funeral Assistant for the Waring-Sullivan Homes of Memorial Tribute.
Active with the Knights of Columbus, he served in many capacities with the third degree, Father Boehr Council and the fourth Degree, Father Donahue Assembly where he served as Faithful Navigator and several years as Faithful purser. He was also a two time recipient of the Sir Knight of the Year Award. He was a member of the William F. Green D.A.V. Chapter 118, Fall River and the Holy Name Society at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and diehard Yankee’s fan.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three daughters; Anne Bernier-LaFleur and her husband Wayne, Marie L. Wong and her husband John and Jeanne S. Bernier and her husband Gabriel Moreno, all of Fall River, two sisters; Antoinette “Toni” Letourneau of Stewart, FL and Joan Carrier and her husband Paul of New Bedford, one brother: Maurice Bernier and his wife Irene of Adamsville, TN, nine grandchildren; Clinton and Elizabeth LaFleur, Marisa Wong, John Wong, Jr., and SrA Jason Wong (USAF) , Christopher and Elora Collins and Alyssa and Gabriel Moreno all of Fall River, three great grandchildren: Victoria and Justin LaFleur and Landon Moitoso and numerous nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Marius, Edward, Normand, Clement, Raymond, Roger and Emma Bernier.
His Funeral will be held Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 9:00AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00AM in Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, 529 Eastern Avenue, Fall River. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 PM. Contributions in his honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905. Entombment in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum, Fall River.
