Ann (Shimabukuro) Colunga, 78, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on August 21, 2026. Born on October 22, 1947, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Ann leaves behind a legacy of dedication, love, and education.
Ann devoted more than four decades of her life to education, serving as a teacher from the late 70’s to 2012. Ann served as Special Education Teacher and Special Education Department Chair, working closely with families, teachers, and students. Ann will be remembered for her compassion, patience, and the unwavering support she offered to her students. All of which extended far beyond the classroom walls.
Ann is survived by her partner, John, and her two children: Carlos and Marisela, her brothers, Roy, and Ned; niece, Mira and nephews, Tibb, and Zenwa. Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Zenshu and Yasuko Shimabukuro, her late husband, Johnny Angel Colunga, and her siblings, Sam, Tom, Bob and Toki.
She will be deeply missed by her family and five grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Mama Colunga." Ann's memory will live on through her family and loved ones, whose lives have been inspired by her love, fortitude and resilience.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 3305 Glen Carlyn Rd, Falls Church, VA 22041, on September 4, 2026, from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
On September 5, 2026, services will take place at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042. A Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life beginning at 2:00 pm, and concluding with a Reception from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
