Dr. Anna R. Hauptman of Arlington, Virginia died in Arlington on March 17, 2018, following a stroke. Born in New York City on September 12, 1926, she was predeceased by her parents, Samuel Roth (born in Ukraine) and Helen Roth (born in Poland). Her brothers, David Roth and Daniel Roth died before her as well. She is survived by her children, Jean Garcia of Santa Rosa, California; Debra Basilis (David Kupfer) of Arlington, VA; and Harvey Hauptman (Sharon Hauptman) of Greenbelt, Maryland. She dearly loved her grandchildren, Tessa Hauptman, Julisa Basilis, and Sam Kupfer.
Raised in the Bronx, she graduated from James Monroe High School. She loved learning, and earned her doctorate from the University of Maryland, decades after completing high school. Dr. Hauptman worked at Gallaudet University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Associates for Renewal in Education (ARE). Anna enjoyed travel, music, golf, live theatre, and cherished spending time with her family. Later in life, she acquired a fondness for crab cakes, a good burger, and single malt scotch.
Her marriage to Robert Hauptman ended in divorce. Her second husband and world travel partner, Norman Landy died in 2005.
A memorial service and burial will be held on Tuesday, March 20 at 1 p.m. at King David Memorial Garden, Falls Church, VA.
