Born on May 10, 1935, in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, Avril grew up surrounded by the warmth of a close-knit community. She later moved to Arlington, Virginia, where she met the love of her life, Bobby Lynn Hughes. Together, they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family.
Avril was predeceased by her devoted husband Bob, and is survived by her children: Jeffrey Hughes (Sherry Leigh Hughes), Tammy Cantow (Edward Cantow), and Bradley Hughes (Colleen Hughes). She was a proud grandmother to Anthony, Nicholas, Kelsey, Angela, Tyler, Elizabeth, Nathaniel, Catherine, and Danielle, and a cherished great-grandmother to Jacob and another great-grandson expected in October.
Throughout her life, Avril was a constant source of support and encouragement to her children and grandchildren, attending every game, recital, and concert with unwavering enthusiasm. Her work—whether as a crossing guard, pool club receptionist, or high school staff—was always chosen with her family in mind, allowing her to remain present and involved in their lives.
Avril’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was deeply active in church, serving with dedication and joy. She even learned to drive a school bus so she could transport children to Bible school, a testament to her selflessness and commitment to others.
She was known for her kindness, honesty, and strength. Avril befriended and cared for everyone she met, always acting with respect and earning it in return. Her ginger snaps and other baked treats brought joy to many, and her love for God, her family, music, sports, and the beach was evident in everything she did.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Avril’s memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to support Parkinson’s research.
A celebration of Avril’s life will be held later this year in Arlington, Virginia. Details will be shared with family and friends in the coming weeks.
