Barbara was born in Roanoke, Virginia, in 1933, to James Stafford Gregory and Linnie Mae Humphries. She was preceded in death by her 9 siblings: Frances, Wilson, Kathleen, Blanche, Fred, Roy, Ray, Jack and Betty. She moved to Arlington, Virginia, in 1936, where her family remained until the passing of her parents in the 1970's.
The love of her life was Herbert Melvin, whom she married in the early 1960's. This was the beginning of a 59-year marriage. After his passing, Barbara wore his wedding ring around her neck until the day she passed.
She worked as a secretary at the Pentagon, where she met Herb, followed by working as an aid and driver at Fairfax Brewster school in Bailey’s Crossroads. She wrapped up her career at the front desk at JEB Stuart High School in Falls Church.
She is survived by four children: Victoria Lynn, Michael Scott, Candace Colleen and Jody Alan; and also kept in close contact with step-daughter Joanne. She had 7 grandchildren: David, Larry, Danny, Jacob, Nicolas, Justin, and Angelina and 4 great-grandchildren: Tabitha, Savannah, Chelsea and David.
Barbara was the epitome of class, known for her elegance and style, even in her later years.
She was also known for her decorating expertise (if you’ve been in her house, you would understand) and her excellence in cooking, which will be missed by her entire family.
Her remembrance and funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 6, at National Memorial Park. Visitation and viewing will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m.
