Barbara passed away on the afternoon of May 7, 2026 (age 86) at her assisted living residence. She was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. She graduated from Litton High School and attended Middle Tennessee State University. In 1958 she married John Nathan Stone, also from Nashville. Nathan joined the DC Fire Department in January 1963 so the family moved from Nashville to the Washington DC area, eventually settling in Northern Virginia. In addition to being a wife & mother of 4, in the 1960s Barbara worked at the Washingtonian Magazine, in the 1970’s for Giant Food, and in the 1980’s for Miller Brewing Company’s regional office. After retirement, she moved to Fredericksburg in the 1990’s and then to Richmond. In 2023 she returned to Northern Virginia.
Barbara was very active with the Masonic organizations, first with Job’s Daughters (Bethel 22), DeMolay (Alexandria-Washington) and Rainbow Girls. Later she joined the Eastern Star (Martha Washington Chapter & Fredericksburg Chapter) where she was Worthy Matron and the Order of the Amaranth where she was Royal Matron of Alexandria Court #7 and Grand Royal Matron of Virginia in 1997/1998.
She was a wonderful pianist and played her whole life. When her hands were not playing the piano they were busy crocheting. She was a lousy cook but thanks to that, both of her daughters became pretty good cooks.
