Spencer Womack in Prince Edward County, Farmville, Virginia. She
was predeceased by two brothers, James and Charlie; and two sisters
Anna and Gladys. She attended school in Prince Edward County,
Virginia. She was baptized and joined at an early age New Hope
Baptist Church in Prince Edward County.
She left Farmville, Virginia and moved to Baltimore, Maryland.
While there she met and married Joseph White in 1938. She resided in
Baltimore for more than 55 years. Her husband predeceased her in July
1983. During her years in Baltimore she joined Faith Baptist Church
and was an active member of the Choir, Homeless Committee,
Visitation Committee and other ministries.
In 1992, she moved to Springfield, Virginia with her son Ernest
Womack. She joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Church immediately after
her arrival in Northern Virginia. She was a faithful and active member
who joyfully served in the Choir, Hospitality/Culinary Ministry,
Homeless Ministry, “Golden Gems” Senior Ministry and attended Bible
Study and Church School. She attended worship services and church
programs regularly until her health began to fail.
Mrs. White especially loved her Mount Pleasant Church family and
received special attention from many members (too many to name
personally) who gave her rides home, gifts of gratitude for birthdays,
Christmas, luncheons and other celebrations in life. She said on many
occasions, “I don’t know why the Lord is keeping me here so long. But
I’m going to keep on going until I cannot.”
Mrs. White always had a kind word and smile for everyone she met.
She was affectionately known as “Granny, Grandma, Mrs. Bea, Sister
White, Cousin Bea and Mother White.” She had a good heart and a
strong desire to help those in need. Her favorite scriptures were Psalms
23, 121, 122, 103 and John 14. She shared her talents tirelessly and
quietly mentored and enriched others. She was a joy and an inspiration
to her family, relatives and friends.
She was happy and honored to receive a greeting card from President Obama in celebration of her 100th birthday.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son Ernest Womack; daughter-
in-law Bertha Womack; four grandchildren, Dianne Womack Monterio,
Patricia Womack, Ernestine (Gregory) Moses, Ernest Womack, Jr.; one
great grandson Halston Womack, one nephew Jasper Gamble; five
grandnieces Joyce, Bernadette, Beverly Robinson of Chicago, IL, Mary
