BEATRICE E. WOOD On October 18, 2016, Beatrice Elizabeth Wood died peacefully with family at her side. She was born 98 years ago in Newark, New Jersey and worked in New York City, enjoying holidays and weekends at the beach and in the Poconos with friends and family. Beatrice met her husband, Franklin Wood at an outing to West Point and they dated during his cadet years. Beatrice and Franklin married in June 1946 after his return from Burma. For the next thirty years, Beatrice lived all over the U.S. and Europe as a true military spouse, packing up and moving innumerable times, with the addition of three children along the way. Valerie was born in Hawaii, Franklin was born in Virginia, and Elizabeth was born in Germany. Beatrice and Franklin finally settled in Annandale, VA. Beatrice loved to travel and after Franklin's retirement from the U.S. Army, they visited historic sites in the U.S. and abroad with friends, associations, and Elder Hostel. Beatrice loved music and laughter. She played the piano and saved sheaves of music and songbooks. Beatrice and Franklin shared a quirky sense of humor, collecting all the Tom Lehrer albums and regularly enjoying Mark Russell's political satire at the Shoreham Hotel's Marquee Lounge. They were also Folger Shakespeare Theatre season ticket holders, and devotees of Wolf Trap, the Warner Theatre and other Washington, DC venues. Beatrice frequently worked as an executive secretary and in later years, as a volunteer at the Smithsonian and for over 25 years, as a volunteer at the George Mason Public Library in Annandale. She was well loved and appreciated by her coworkers for her volunteerism, acute administrative skills, and frequent culinary treats. Beatrice's crowning glory was her talent for cooking, where she excelled at dishes in the Viennese tradition, preparing complicated family recipes and adding her own creations. Family, friends, and coworkers alike looked forward to enjoying her specialties. Beatrice was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin; sister, Emily; brother, Rudolph and granddaughter, Dana Wood. She is survived by her three children, grandchildren, Brian Hrenak, Andrew Moorcones, Amy Moorcones, Bradley Wood and Tara Wood Bragg; and great-grandchild, Cole Bragg. Family and friends may gather on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at 2 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church, Virginia.
