Ben was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Mary and Joseph Schwind (both deceased) and in his 53 years enjoyed family life with his brothers Joe, Ted, Pete (deceased) and Matt, and many neighbors and co-workers. All knew Ben as a generous soul who offered time and diligent effort to anyone in need. Ben graduated from Old Dominion University in 1995 and most recently worked with the US Postal Service as an Engineer.
Ben was quiet and reserved, but an astute political observer of inside-the-beltway shenanigans. He knew history like a professor, debated important topics like a statesman, and “brought the receipts” to back it all up. He knew the nuances of political topics that “journalists” wouldn’t print and Sunday talk shows wouldn’t discuss. Ben was a lifelong Patriot of the highest caliber. A Washington Capitals hockey fan, Saint Louis Cardinals and Baltimore Orioles baseball fan, and a fan of just about any football team playing the Washington Redskins.
Ben spent the better part of his last 27 years living at home and taking care of his mother Mary, who was widowed. Ben watched over her and provided comfort, care, and loving attention. Ben extended his thoughtfulness to Mary’s many friends, where Ben could often be found helping with chores and errands to his ‘extended family’. Ben quietly and without fanfare gave of his time unselfishly. He donated platelets at Fairfax hospital over 150 times in the last decade alone.
Ben loved his dog. He mostly owned Boston Terriers and could be seen walking the block or sitting in the carport with his dog. The perfect companion on any occasion, Ben and his dog were inseparable.
Ben is survived by his brother’s Joe (Samantha), Ted, and Matt (Darlene). Two nephews William and Dylan, and many uncles, aunts, and cousins all across the country.
A Catholic funeral Mass and burial will take place at Saint James Church in Falls Church, Virginia.
