I deeply regret that I cannot be in attendance at Berge's memorial. I have many fond memories of Berge. I always admired his integrity and discipline. I will share my favorite interaction with him. I was invited to his 75th birthday party at the home in Annandale. The invitation very clearly stated "No Gifts". In a moment I couldn't resist, I still brought him one. Upon presentation, he tried to refuse but I convinced him it was something he would appreciate. Upon removing the wrapping , he found a glass candy jar with $75 in nickels and dimes and a card that said, "these are all the nickels and dimes I have been stealing from you for the past 10 years". Berge smiled widely and said, "Now that's a gift I'll take".  I'll miss him greatly. - Doug Clarke

Your loss is also our loss, for he was such a good man whose act of kindness has touched our lives in so many ways. He will be missed tremendously.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, employees and customers whose lives Berge deeply touched. To me, Berge embodied the greatest traits of his generation: loyalty, empathy, faith, and a tireless work ethic.

I have to admit I was intimidated when I first met Berge 41 years ago at the old McLean location.  I had just started my first pool business at age 20.  Berge sat me down, spoke with me for 15 minutes, and opened an account for me. There was no credit application, just trust and a handshake.  Berge became a mentor and role model as I built my company.

Fast forward 20 years.  I met with Berge to let him know that I was selling my pool business and had started a new pool automation company called CAT Controllers.  Berge was so proud, he insisted on buying the first six units I produced.  

Berge’s confidence motivated me to hold myself to a higher standard. By always believing in me, Berge encouraged me to face challenges head on.  And most amazingly, I know mine is only one of many, many lives enriched through Berge’s mentorship.

I had the privilege of being a vendor to Berge and his company for 27 years.  He was always great to work with and very accommodating to the vendors. He also was always interested in what was new and what products were available to help his main focus - "his customers"
As we all know Berge was a pioneer in our industry and we will miss him.

Deeply saddened to hear about Berge's passing.  My condolences to his entire family - related, business, and friends.   My family lived next to his for over thirteen years in Annandale, before moving west to Loudoun County.  Up until the last few years, he worked at least 6 days a week, often times leaving before the sun came up, and returning long after the sun had set.  He was a self-made success story for small business owners, placing service and customer satisfaction above all else.  RIP Berge!

We all have fond memories of our interactions with Berge throughout the years including the early years in McLean.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
