On November 23, 1929, the late Frank (Pete) and Sarah Siemers welcomed their third son, Burl, to their growing family in Luray, Kansas. After graduating high school, Burl enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War. Upon returning home, he started a career in electronics that would take him from T.V. repair man up to the FBI.
In 1950, during his service, he met and married the late Teresa L. Miller in Arlington, VA. Burl and Teresa had two daughters — Cindy and Pam — and spent 45 years together before Teresa's passing in 1996.
In 1997, Burl married Sondra Meyer in Fairfax, VA. Burl and Sandy were married for 25 years.
After 25 years with the Federal Government, Burl retired from the FBI. He spent his retirement actively serving his community as a volunteer in the Neighborhood Watch Program and the Fairfax County Police Department. While working with the Police, he spearheaded a battery recycling program and received an award for his environmental merit. As a member of the Knights of Columbus, he routinely spent weekends volunteering at their functions and events.
A man of many catchphrases, voices, and sometimes nonsensical phrases, everyone loved being around Burl. As they played games with him, his grandchildren's peals of laughter would echo throughout the house. Children and adults alike were regularly entertained by his stories, playful hollering, and his impeccable Donald Duck impression.
Burl had many nicknames throughout his life. The most endearing was “Barney” inspired by Barney Fife of the Andy Griffith Show. Whatever you called him, nobody ever called him late to dinner.
Burl never met a meal he couldn't finish, a buffet he didn't love, or a song he couldn't whistle. He was an avid fisherman who never caught a thing but who stashed the best Spam sandwiches and Pecan Twirls in his tackle box.
Burl lived the life he wanted the way he wanted, and, heavens to Murgatroyd, he'll be greatly missed.
Burl is survived by his wife, Sandy, daughters Cindy (Jim) Sutton and Pam (Steve) Rhode; step-children Joe (Cathy) Ganley, Joyce (Pat) Wright, Janis (John) Finks; ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren
Burl is preceded in death by his first wife, Teresa, his parents, four brothers, and stepson Mark Ousley.
Services will be private by the gravesite in the spring. For those wishing to donate in Burl's memory, please consider the following:
