Catalina Esperanza Molina

Catalina E. Molina, lovingly known as “Mami Catalina,” Nina passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of strength, resilience, and unconditional love that will continue to inspire generations.

Catalina was born on November 25, 1933, in San Juan Ostuncalco, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, to her loving parents, Eleno Molina and Antonia Ochoa de Molina. She was raised in a close-knit family alongside her seven siblings, where she developed the determination, compassion, and strong work ethic that would define her life.

Blessed with four beloved children, Catalina made one of the most courageous decisions of her life by leaving her hometown in search of greater opportunities for her family. With remarkable faith and perseverance, she ventured into the unknown, eventually making her way to the United States. Her sacrifices were driven by a single purpose—to provide a brighter future not only for her children but also to help support her parents, siblings, and loved ones she had left behind in Guatemala.

Catalina immigrated to Washington, D.C., in the 1960s, where she built a life filled with hard work, friendship, and love. She cherished bringing family and friends together and found great joy in taking walks through the beautiful gardens of Washington, especially each spring when the tulips were in full bloom.

On November 17, 1983, Catalina moved to Falls Church, Virginia, where she remained for the rest of her life. Her home became her sanctuary, surrounded by colorful flowers and the songs of birds she lovingly fed each day. One of her greatest pleasures was walking through her garden, cutting fresh flowers to display throughout her home, creating a place that reflected the beauty, warmth, and love she shared so freely with everyone around her.

Catalina’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother whose kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love touched every life she encountered. Her gentle spirit, generous heart, and enduring strength will be forever treasured by those blessed to know her.

Catalina was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Eleno (“Papa Leno”) Molina and Antonia (“MaTona”) Ochoa de Molina, as well as two brothers and two sisters.

She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory. Catalina is survived by her devoted children, Juan Carlos Madrid and his wife, Anabella Madrid; L. Catalina Dintruff; Rodolfo Valentino Monterroso and his wife, Maria Del Rosario Monterroso; and Irma de los Angeles Monterroso.

She was the proud and loving grandmother of Mely Robles, Carolina Madrid, Juan Carlos Madrid Jr., Aida Ines Perez Monterroso, Byron Perez Monterroso, Chessy Marie Macdonald, Meredith Monterroso, Rodolfo Gabriel Monterroso, and Joylene A. Monterroso.

Catalina was also blessed with eleven great-grandchildren: Brandon Robles, Desiree Robles, Jazmine Robles, Jayla Robles, Jiselle Robles, Brielle Robles, Alexa B. Madrid, Brooklyn Machen-Madrid, Celene Machen-Madrid, Valentina El Abbassi, and Jameson Macdonald.

Her legacy continues through her treasured great-great-granddaughter, Amina Knox, who brought Catalina immense pride and joy.

Though Catalina’s physical presence is no longer with us, her love lives on in every flower that blooms, every bird that sings, every family gathering filled with laughter, and in the hearts of the children and generations she so selflessly nurtured. Her life stands as a beautiful testament to courage, sacrifice, faith, and the enduring power of a mother’s love.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Philip Catholic Church, 7500 St Philips Ct, Falls Church, VA 22042, US, on August 1, 2026, from 10:30 am to 11:15 pm.

A Visitation Gathering will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church, VA 22046, US, on August 1, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
